"Domestic Goods Week" Celebrated with Excitement at Işık University

As the legacy of the great leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the Domestic Goods Week was celebrated with excitement and joy by Işık University Social Responsibility Projects Club with the "Domestic Goods Bazaar" set up in Şile Campus.

The idea behind the Domestic Goods Week dates back to the early 1920s when the founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, summoned for Izmir Economy Congress in 1923. It was decided in the congress that manufacturing and using domestic goods was crucial for the maintenance of national independence. Accordingly, on Ataürk's orders, National Economy and Saving Association was founded to commence the celebration of the Domestic Goods Week in 1929.

With this goal in mind, the students of Işık University Social Responsibility Projects Club implemented the Domestic Goods Bazaar project for the first time in Işık University.

The activity was carried out on 25 December, 2012, receiving much attention form the students. The students were additionally happy to see the actor and jazz musician Taylan ERLER as a guest of the celebrations. Taylan ERLER expressed his contentment with the organization congratulating Işık University students for their creativity and conservation of national values, Turkish traditions and Atatürk's legacy.

Today, the celebration of Domestic Goods Week is unfortunately considered as a nostalgic event limited to elementary schools. However, the spirit of this week should be remembered and sustained by the youth as an opportunity to raise awareness in the consumption of local sources. In this sense, Işık University students set up the bazaar to show that consumption of domestic products is a civic duty.

Having been celebrated in a university environment for the first time, the event was sponsored by big Turkish business corporations such as Uludağ Gazoz, Kuru Kahveci Mehmet Efendi, Vefa Bozacısı, İpek Pişmaniye, and Hacı Bekir Şekercisi. The groups under Işık University Social Responsibility Projects Club sold goods in the bazaar to raise money for their future projects. In this way, the club budget grew considerably.

The fund raised by the students of Işık University Social Responsibility Projects Club will be spent on a number of projects for the disabled and elementary school children. To this purpose, moneyboxes for toys and books will be installed on different spots around the campus to make the disabled and school children happy, who are in serious need of help.
